Private Charles George Woods
Charles George Woods was born on 12 May 1890 at Castlefinn, County Donegal, one of eleven children of Royal Irish Constabulary sergeant (later farmer) John Woods and his wife Elizabeth (nee Charters). By 1911 he was living with his parents and younger brother at Cavanaweery, near Castlefinn, and working on the family farm.
Woods enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Castlefinn on 2 April 1913 (No.823). Although mobilised on 8 August 1914, he was invalided out of the army on 10 October that year (paragraph 392 xvi, King's Regulations). His military character was recorded as "very good".
On 18 June 1917 the Ministry of Pensions awarded him a gratuity of £12.10.
After his discharge Woods returned to farming, and after the war served as secretary of the local branch of the British Legion. On 20 May 1936 he married factory worker Anne McMenamin at St Columba's Church, Doneyloop. He died at his home, Finnlodge, Castlefinn, on 29 September 1945 and was buried in the cemetery next to St Columba's Church.
